Storm Update
Thus far we have not had any major incidents resulting from the storm. We would however like to remind citizens that the Governor has declared a state of emergency and banned all non-essential traffic from the roadways. I would encourage you to check on elderly neighbors to make sure that they are ok, and advise the department if they are in need of assistance.
Homeowners should be especially aware of heating system power vents, which routinely are used in new home construction to eliminate the chimney. They stick out of the existing building and blow exhaust fumes out of your furnace. It is imperative that resident’s clear snow away from the power vents as carbon monoxide can be forced back into a home and could result in sickness and even death. CO is an odorless gas and the only warnings signs to its presence are headache, nausea and vomiting prior to unconsciousness. Homeowners should ensure that they have CO detectors within their residence for early warning of problems.
If you lose power call the Danvers Police Station at 978-774-1212 to report the issue. If you observe power lines down stay away from the area and report it immediately. If you should choose to utilize a portable generator keep it outside your residence where the exhaust fumes cannot enter your home. You should also shut off the main circuit breaker in your home unless you have a professionally installed cut over switch. This will prevent an overload from occurring when the power is restored.
Finally, we urge people to never place your hands near the ejection chute of a snow blower if it clogs. Shut off the blower and use a piece of wood to clear ice and obstructions. Every year we respond to medical aids involving people who have been severely injured due to this practice.
Sincerely,
Neil F. Ouellette
Chief of Police
